The optional panoramic glass sunroof, with an area of more than half a square meter, lets in twice as much daylight as a conventional sunroof. The roof is of glazed appearance all the way from the windscreen to the rear window, emphasising the sporty looks of the Audi A3 Sportback.

The open sky system gives you and your passengers a new, heightened sense of spaciousness. The large glass roof lets more light into the car, and as much fresh air as is desired. The divided glass panel allows you to open it in various ways. If the front panel is raised at the rear, the passenger compartment is supplied with draught-free fresh air even when the car is travelling at high speeds. The comfort position involves sliding the roof partly to the rear. And when opened fully and slid back, the open sky system affords new perspectives on the outside world. You operate it simply by pressing a switch.

If you want comfortable ventilation but no direct sunlight, a blind gives you the right amount of shade.

This option is not available on the Audi A3 Sportback 1.6 TDI.

TFSI: Direct petrol injection and turbocharging combined
TFSI technology unlocks superior power, more dynamic performance and better economy from petrol engines.

For example, the 1.4-litre version of the TFSI engine features great economy and, thanks to its turbocharger, manages to deliver an amazing 200Nm of torque and a top speed of 126mph. Quite simply, it feels as though it’s a bigger engine than it is.

You’ll notice enhanced driving enjoyment with spontaneous and dynamic torque build up. In turn, this encourages you to change up earlier so you don’t feel the need to rev the engine so much, promoting greater efficiency.

This impressive technology hasn’t gone unnoticed. The 2.0 litre version of the TFSI engine has been voted “International Engine of the Year” by a panel of 64 motoring journalists from over 30 countries. They cited it as “A blend of performance and efficiency. An example to all engine manufacturers.”

TDI – and the most fuel-efficient Audi ever
A dedication to pioneering technology has brought Audi great expertise in turbocharged diesel engines. All Audi TDI engines are equipped with common rail technology to achieve smooth, efficient and quiet combustion. Diesel fuel related emissions are significantly reduced thanks to a diesel particulate filter, fitted as standard, which filters out almost all soot particles contained in the exhaust gas.

The A3 1.6 TDI is the most fuel-efficient Audi ever returning a quite remarkable 68.9mpg on a combined cycle. Yet it can still accelerate from 0-62mph in 11.4 seconds (11.7 on the A3 Sportback), has a top speed of 121mph and CO2 emissions of just 109g/km.

The turbocharger has variable turbine vane geometry to help produce higher torque and stronger pulling power. And sophisticated air-flow control also contributes to the engine’s capabilities while simultaneously reducing nitrogen oxide emissions.

Servotronic
Audi’s servotronic steering was developed on the racetrack. It increases pressure to the steering rack based on vehicle and steering speed. It senses when the wheel is turned and distributes the perfect amount of power assistance.

When you’re parking or driving more slowly, the steering wheel requires less movement for reduced effort on your part. On the motorway, the steering is optimised so long, sweeping bends are dealt with smoothly and without you having to adjust the wheel so much.

Servotronic makes such a valuable contribution to your driving pleasure, it’s only right that it’s supplied as standard throughout the Audi A3 range. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

With the optional Audi DVD-based navigation system, it’s extremely hard to get lost. Simply enter a new destination in the centre console or just say where you want to go using the Voice Control System.

Compared to a CD-ROM, the DVD-based navigation system can hold nine times as much information. So maps load faster and there’s more detail when you zoom in. You can also specify modifications to the route such as avoiding or using motorways, toll roads and ferries. And you can recall favourite and recent destinations which are stored in your address book.

The system can also adjust the route you’re taking dynamically based on the latest traffic situation. It receives RDS-TMC (Traffic Message Channel) automatically so it knows about hold-ups before you do and, if dynamic navigation is active, the system automatically recomputes the route.

A six-channel advanced amplifier delivers a massive 195 watts of power to eight high-performance speakers. One central speaker in the dashboard, two tweeters in the A pillars, two bass/midrange speakers in the doors, two bass/midrange speakers in the side sections of the rear seats and finally a powerful woofer with 9.7-litre bass reflex housing in the luggage compartment side panel.

Flexibility and convenience in the concert radio system
Standard on Sport and S line, the concert radio system is easy to operate. Thanks to a dynamically changing radio station list, only receivable stations are displayed. There are two FM tuners – one for receiving the currently selected station and one to hunt for new stations in the background.

The concert radio is equipped with an MP3 and WMA-compatible CD drive and, with MP3s, all the song file data (title, artist, length, etc) can be displayed. There’s also an aux-in socket so you can connect audio devices such as MP3 players and deliver sound through the car’s fantastic speakers.

Want to play tunes from your Apple iPod? Plug it in!
The optional iPod preparation allows you to play iPod tunes, in play list order. You simply plug your iPod in and play through the in-car speakers. This also charges your iPod, depending on model.

Audi Music Interface: your music goes with you
A very wide range of portable music devices can integrate with your car via the optional Audi Music Interface. Once installed, they can be controlled with the multi-function steering wheel if you’ve had one fitted. Supported devices include USB memory sticks, portable hard discs, mobile phones, MP3 players and Apple iPods – even portable cassette players.

But it’s not just the audio signal that’s transmitted. With compatible devices, detailed track information is displayed. Audi Music Interface is only available in combination with DVD Satellite Navigation.

Mobile phones
A built-in hands-free phone system is available as an option across the A3 range.

The options

This option provides a Bluetooth connection for your mobile phone to allow hands-free operation in conjunction with an optional multi-function steering wheel.

Your mobile phone is paired with the system via Bluetooth or a cradle adapter.

In addition to standard hands-free functionality such as accepting and rejecting calls and hands-free communication, mobile phone preparation provides direct access to entries and phone numbers stored in the address book of compatible phones.

Mobile phone preparation low comprises a user-friendly hands-free unit, a high-performance external aerial and a charging facility. Your mobile phone is paired with the system with a Bluetooth or cradle adaptor which can be obtained from your Audi Centre.

The big advantage of this system is that the cradle adaptor uses the car’s power supply and external antenna to make and receive calls which improves call quality and reduces handset battery consumption. Your phone can be mounted in a cradle on the dashboard or installed in the front centre armrest. It is highly recommended that you opt for the multifunction steering wheel for optimal hands-free operation.

Great efficiency, low emissions – just 109g/km CO2
Reducing engines size and combining advanced energy-saving technologies. That’s how Audi is achieving remarkable efficiency without sacrificing performance or driving pleasure. The Audi A3 Sportback is now available with a new 1.6-litre TDI engine. Good efficiency means low emissions so road tax is cheaper. And if you drive it as a company car you might get tax advantages.

Impressive performance figures and improved economy

The A3 1.6 TDI goes from 0-62mph in 11.4 seconds, has a top speed of 121mph, delivers 68.9mpg combined and 109g/km CO2 output.

Why run the engine when you’re standing still?
If you’re stuck in traffic, what’s the point of wasting fuel by letting the engine idle needlessly? Once up to operating temperature, Audi start/stop technology cuts the engine when the car is stationary, in neutral with the clutch depressed. The engine immediately and quietly starts again as soon as you release the clutch. The whole process is smooth and simple but it can be disabled at the touch of a button if required.

Recuperation
When you’re coasting or braking, the car’s alternator generates electricity. Recuperation allows it to be stored so when you’re accelerating or driving at a constant speed, the stored electricity is used to drive the alternator. Recuperation reduces fuel consumption by up to 3% and therefore also lowers CO2 emissions.

Driver’s Information System with efficiency program
Individual driving styles play a significant part in determining fuel efficiency. Where fitted, the Driver’s Information System with efficiency program can help by providing valuable tips and information to enable the most efficient driving style at all times.

Selecting the right gear at the right time is key to optimising fuel consumption. The Driver’s Information System has a gearshift indicator that suggests when to change gear and which gear to change to. By following the system’s recommendations, you’ll drive more efficiently.

Comfort features such as air conditioning and seat heating increase fuel consumption. The efficiency program helps you monitor this by telling you which systems in the car require additional energy and how high their share of fuel consumption is. For example, the program will advise you to close an open window while the air conditioning is switched on.

Sleek design for greater efficiency
Aerodynamic performance is critical for reducing fuel consumption and raising efficiency. Audi prototypes spend over 1,000 hours in a wind tunnel with improvements being made so drag can be reduced. Less air resistance also means improved handling, lower CO2 emissions and even improved safety. Improvements such as door mirrors which are aerodynamically shaped so rain is directed away from the side windows for better all-round visibility is another notable product of this extensive development process.

After rigorously testing and fine tuning the new Audi A3 Sportback, it achieved a remarkably low drag co-efficient of just 0.33.

The revolutionary S tronic transmission combines the responsiveness of a manual gearbox with the convenience of an automatic. Thanks to innovative dual-clutch technology, S tronic can make a gear change in just 0.2 of a second, with no interruption to the power flow, allowing you to benefit as fully as possible from the engine’s output at all times, resulting in better fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions.
